Otter Control

Otters are probably the most aggressive animals we work with.  They are also probably the most destructive to your crawlspace.  Otters will destroy insulation and ducting, and leave droppings and the remains of their fishy meals in your crawlspace.  It doesn’t take long for the odor to build to intolerable levels.  They also love a moist environment, and will actively break pipes to get water to soak the ground.  PVC cold water supply lines are especially prone to their damage.  Sometimes they will move into a crawlspace when the foundation is saturated from heavy storms and there is standing water in low spots.

They are voracious diggers and very cautious which makes them especially difficult to capture as they will dig new access points into their den as needed to avoid a trap.  However, with the right techniques, even the most persistent otter problems can be solved.

River Otters can be found in both fresh and salt water, and will occupy land based dens within 200 yards of the body of water they hunt in.  Most homes infested with otter are waterfront properties on Lakes, rivers, or bays.

Here in western Washington and the Puget Sound area, otters are quite common as you may expect.  While common around here, they are rare in most of the rest of the USA and as such their populations are protected under threatened species.  This means that Otter are one of the species that we are permitted to relocate.

Otter have one litter each year, and can have up to 5 young in a litter.  The females may remain with their mother in the same den until the next birthing season.

Their diet is carnivorous and primarily consists of fish, shellfish, and amphibians, though they will also eat small aquatic mammals such as muskrat.
